Remembering Daniel

A life held close in memory

Daniel Campos, born September 28, 1968, in Toppenish, Washington, was remembered for his generous spirit, his love of food, and his fierce loyalty to family and friends. The fifth of eight children of Samuel and Ramona (Santos) Campos, Daniel made his way through life with a big heart and an open door. He found joy in the kitchen, working as a chef at several Valley restaurants where he delighted others by sharing meals he prepared with care. Cooking was more than a job for Daniel — it was his way of bringing people together.

Described by those who knew him as someone who never knew a stranger, Daniel was quick to help and protective of those around him. He enjoyed keeping active, taking an interest in boxing and working out, and he was rarely without music playing his favorite songs. Above all, he took pleasure in feeding his family and friends and creating moments of comfort around the table.

Daniel is survived by his son, Jessie Ray, and his grandson, Romeo Ray, as well as his parents, Samuel and Romona Campos. He also leaves behind sisters and brothers including Esther Ruiz (Julio), Sarah Cantu (Adrian), Abel Campos (Angie), Beatrice Montelongo (Thomas), Ramon Campos (Brezzi), Eliseo Campos, Mary Ruiz (Toribio), and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Samuel (Sammy) Campos. Those who knew Daniel remember him for his kindness, his willingness to stand up for others, and the warmth he brought into everyday life.

Family and friends gathered to honor Daniel’s life with a visitation held on April 26, 2019, and a funeral service on April 27 at Iglesia Del Valle in Toppenish. He was laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery. In remembering Daniel, his loved ones recall a man who found meaning in feeding others, protecting those he cared for, and sharing simple acts of generosity that left a lasting impression on his community.
