Christopher Chris Pugh

Christopher Alexander Pugh II was known to family and friends as Chris — a lively, devoted young man whose life was defined by service, family, and the small joys that made him who he was. A soldier in the U.S. Army and a member of the 1st Battalion, 14th Field Artillery Regiment stationed at Fort Sill, he completed deployments and training with commitment, serving two tours in South Korea and preparing for further duty. Those who loved him remember his energy on the dance floor, his quick wit, and the obvious pride he carried as a husband and father.

Chris was 23 when his life was taken on April 27, 2019. In the months that followed, his family and community gathered in Memphis to celebrate him — sharing memories of his laughter, his love for family, and the hopes he held for the future. His parents spoke of a son who wanted to do better and to build a life for his children; his mother described him as her “sunshine,” and family members emphasized his tenderness as a dad.

In the years since his death, Chris’s memory has become the foundation for work aimed at changing lives. His mother, J. Machelle Pugh, founded the Christopher A. Pugh II Center for Men in Memphis to provide mentoring, job training, and support for young men facing systemic and economic barriers. That effort, born from grief, seeks to honor Chris by helping others find purpose, skills, and safer paths forward.
