Chanty Shiverdecker — Unsolved 1994 Murder Case
Chanty Martria Shiverdecker, a 15‑year‑old from Eureka, Illinois, was murdered on December 9, 1994, in Alexander City, Alabama
. She was active in sports, sang in the church choir, and was known for her vibrant personality despite being born with albinism, which gave her white‑blond hair, light eyes, and required her to wear glasses or contacts.
Circumstances of Disappearance
Chanty had just moved to Alexander City six weeks before her disappearance. She joined the girls’ basketball team at Radney Elementary School and was scheduled to attend an extra practice that Day for a tournament
. Her parents were out of town, so her older brother Chris was to pick her up after practice. She was supposed to call once practice ended, but she did not. By 10:00 p.m., Chris was concerned and began searching. After an hour, he called their parents, who instructed him to contact the police
Search and Discovery
The following morning, search parties covered a 10‑mile area around the school. Initially considered a possible runaway, officials later suspected foul play
. On February 24, 1995, an anonymous tip led investigators to an abandoned lumberyard off Highway 9, where they found Chanty’s nude body in a wooded area behind an abandoned mobile home.
Her clothing and backpack were never recovered, but her books and purse were later found nearby, apparently thrown from a car window.
Investigation and Status
The death was ruled a homicide, but the cause of death could not be determined due to the condition of the remains
. In 1995, a suspect in Seattle, WA, claimed to have killed Chanty along with others in Wyoming and Florida, but investigators later found insufficient evidence and discredited the claims
. The case remains open, with ongoing efforts by the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office, Alexander City Police Department, and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation
Memorial and Legacy
Chanty is buried at Hillview Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Alexander City, Alabama
. Her family and community continue to seek justice, and the case is featured in cold case advocacy resources and true crime discussions
