In loving memory of
Chanelle Star Rosebear
March 21, 2005
Chanelle Star Rosebear, a bright 15-year-old from Ponemah, loved basketball, cheered for her classmates, and greeted others with a ready smile — a young life remembered for warmth, energy, and promise.
Remembering Chanelle
A life held close in memory
Chanelle Star Rosebear was a young member of the Red Lake community whose short life made a lasting impression on friends, family and neighbors. At 15, Chanelle was known as a tall, graceful freshman who loved school life and the simple joys of being a teen. Classmates remembered her as someone who always smiled and had many friends.
Chanelle played on community basketball teams and was a cheerleader — activities that connected her to classmates and gave her a place of belonging. Those who knew her remember a bright, athletic girl who looked forward to high school and the future. Members of her community described her as happy-natured and involved in youth life on the reservation.
Her funeral was held in Ponemah with family and the community honoring her memory in traditional ways. In the years since, Chanelle’s name has been kept alive in local remembrances and community projects; a basketball court in Ponemah carries her name, serving as a place where younger players gather and remember the promise she represented.
Though public records are necessarily limited to accounts of events and community remembrances, those sources make clear that Chanelle was more than the date on a calendar: she was a daughter, a sister in a large family, a teammate, and a smiling presence in a small, tight-knit community. Her life is remembered in ongoing annual memorials in Red Lake and in local efforts that honor the students lost that day. Chanelle’s presence — on the court, in the bleachers, and among friends — remains part of the community’s story and memory.

Chanelle was gone far too soon. May the love, memories, and moments connected to this life continue to be treasured, and may those mourning find comfort in remembering what mattered most.
