A formal remembrance
Chad Davis VanScotter (Aug. 9, 1971 — Jan. 28, 2025) was a familiar and steady presence in the Clarkston community whose work in local kitchens nourished many and whose quiet loyalty grounded family and friends. A graduate of Clarkston High School, Chad began his food-service career at Zuper’s Pizza and went on to spend 24 years cooking for his neighbors, including 17 years at the original Rusty’s Ranch Café where he served as kitchen manager and head cook. His careful hands and dependable work were part of countless meals and memories for the community.
Born to Gary and Jeanine VanScotter, Chad built a life in the place he called home. He married Michelle Barnes on July 23, 2003, and their partnership was central to his life. Chad’s career in restaurants lasted until 2014, when health issues forced him to step back from the demanding pace of kitchen work. Those who knew him remember a man who took pride in doing a job well and who enjoyed the simple rhythms of community life.
Chad was preceded in death by his father, Gary VanScotter, and his paternal grandparents, Alvin and Arla VanScotter. He is survived by his wife, Michelle VanScotter; his mother, Jeanine VanScotter of Clarkston; his sister, Kimberly (Kent Anderson) VanScotter of Anatone; his niece Kyanna VanScotter; and cousin Ruby Smith, along with many friends who shared meals and stories over the years.
A celebration of Chad’s life will be held from 1–3 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the Valley Community and Senior Center in Clarkston. Friends and family are invited to bring a favorite side dish or dessert for a potluck in his memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Senior Round Table (Meals on Wheels for Asotin County), a cause close to Chad’s community-minded spirit.
Chad’s life was defined by steady work, familiar places, and the relationships he kept close. He will be remembered by those who sat at his counter, those who shared a shift in a hot kitchen, and the family who loved him.
