Remembering Cartez

A life held close in memory

Cartez J'Uan Woolen (July 1, 1976 – September 2, 2014) was a devoted family member and familiar presence in his Birmingham community. Those who knew Cartez recall a man whose smile and easy manner left an impression on friends and relatives alike. Surrounded by the care of family and friends in the days before his service, Cartez's life was honored at a public visitation held at Davenport & Harris Funeral Home and in a funeral service at Zion Hill Baptist Church, where loved ones gathered to celebrate his memory and lay him to rest at Elmwood Cemetery.

Family, friends, and neighbors shared memories of Cartez over the visitation and at the service, offering stories of his personality and the everyday moments that mattered most. The guest book and messages left by those who attended reflect the affection and respect held for him—words of comfort, recollections of shared times, and hopes that his memory will be carried forward by those who loved him.

While the public record marks the dates of his life, it is the quiet traces of his relationships and the gatherings held in his honor that speak to Cartez’s importance to his family and community. He is remembered in prayer, in the words left by friends, and in the company of those who came together to celebrate his life.

Cartez's family invited those who wished to honor his memory to leave messages and to support the arrangements made through Davenport-Harris Funeral Home. Though his time was shorter than anyone hoped, the warmth of the tributes offered at his service stands as a testament to the place he held in the hearts of people who knew him.
