Remembering Carter

A life held close in memory

Carter Lee Coley Jr. was a bright, energetic young man whose warmth and humor left a mark on family, teammates, and his church community. A senior at Woodward High School, Carter was a committed varsity football player who stood out as a 2nd-team All City linebacker and also contributed as a running back. He carried pride in his team and played with dedication that inspired classmates and coaches.

Outside of sports, Carter shared his faith through the praise dancing team at Body of Christ Refuge, where his presence was described as joyful and sincere. Summers working for the City of Toledo had given him practical experience and fueled plans to continue serving his community; he intended to join the Army National Guard and return to Toledo to build a life and career.

Carter was beloved by his parents, Carter Sr. and Tamara Coley, his siblings, and a wide circle of relatives and friends who remember his smile, his playful spirit, and the easy way he made others laugh. He was a devoted son, brother, godson, and friend whose energy and promise were evident to those around him. Family and community members recalled his warmth and the small kindnesses that made him memorable: encouraging teammates, brightening church services with dance, and enjoying time with nieces and nephews.

Though his life was cut far too short on November 14, 2014, Carter’s legacy lives on in the stories shared by family, the memories of teammates at Woodward High, and the congregation where he worshipped. Those who loved him honor his plans, his talents, and the affection he freely gave. Carter is remembered with deep love and with the hope that his name will continue to inspire caring, community, and service in the years ahead.

Carter was gone far too soon. May the love, memories, and moments connected to this life continue to be treasured, and may those mourning find comfort in remembering what mattered most.
