Obituary

A formal remembrance

Carlis James Falls (August 24, 1978 – December 28, 2021) is remembered for his devotion to family, his love of the game, and his steady presence in the Evansville community. A husband and father of three, Carlis balanced his roles at home with a busy life as a small-business owner and community coach.

Born in Chicago and raised by his mother Eartha Falls, Carlis built a life in Evansville where he owned and operated several businesses, including Chief Contracting and Smoke Therapy, and was part-owner of Vertical Contracting. He took pride in his work and in providing for his family, and his entrepreneurship became part of how friends and neighbors knew him.

Outside of work, Carlis’s passion for football was clear. He played semi-professionally for local teams, including the Bearcats and the Evansville Vipers, and later shared that experience as a coach with the Lakeview Optimist League and Castle Youth Football League. Coaching allowed him to stay connected to the sport he loved and to mentor young athletes in his community.

Carlis also loved motorcycles — especially his Ducati — and had a fondness for classic cars, including a 1967 Lincoln Continental. A lifelong fan of Chicago teams, he especially enjoyed cheering for the Bears and following Notre Dame football. Those who knew him recall his easy laugh, his pride in family, and his willingness to help others when needed.

He is survived by his wife Shemeka; children Carlis, Aniyah, and Kysonn; his mother Eartha; siblings Henrietta, Tony, Albert, and Lymond; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, and extended family. Funeral services were arranged by Alexander Funeral Home — East Chapel and held in early January 2022.

Carlis’s life was defined by love for his family, a commitment to his work, and a generosity of spirit toward the young people he coached. He is remembered for the practical ways he cared for those around him, and for the small, everyday moments that reflected his deep ties to family and community.
