Carl Batie

Carl Kion “Kion” Batie of Willingboro was remembered for his warm smile, sharp sense of style and commitment to the work he loved. A lifelong Trenton native who graduated from Trenton Central High School with the Class of 2003, Carl found his calling in corrections work and began his service at the Mercer County Correction Center in 2007. He completed the Mercer County Police Academy’s Corrections Officer Training Program as a cadet in May 2008 and was praised by coworkers for his dedication and the respect he earned on the job.

Kion treasured time with family and friends. He enjoyed caring for his dogs, traveling, riding ATVs and the lively social moments he shared with his brothers and close friends. He was known in his community for a generous spirit and an easy charisma that made people smile. Carl is remembered by his loving mother and stepfather, Elaine Batie and Kim Young; six brothers, Karon, Karshawn, Kamar, Kareem, Kyle and Khalil; grandfather Carl Derry; grandmother Shirley Young; and a wide circle of relatives, friends and his Mercer County Correction family. He was also loved by his girlfriend, Asha Wall.

Funeral services were held at Shiloh Baptist Church in Trenton with interment at Ewing Cemetery. In remembering Carl, family and colleagues recalled a young man who carried himself with quiet pride, who took his responsibilities seriously, and who brought warmth and stylish confidence to everyday moments. Though his life was cut tragically short, the memories of his kindness, dedication and the laughter he shared endure among those who loved him.
