Remembering Cameron

A life held close in memory

Cameron Taylor was a 20-year-old from Portland, Oregon, whose life was cherished by family and friends. Those who knew him remember a young person rooted in his community — part of the city’s neighborhoods and social life — whose presence mattered to people close to him.

On the evening of August 28, 2022, Cameron was at a large public gathering in the Marine Drive/Expo Center area where many people had come to watch a display of vehicles. In the confusion that followed a burst of gunfire, Cameron was struck and later taken from the scene by a friend. They stopped at a nearby Shell station on Northeast Broadway to try to get him medical help; despite those efforts he did not survive. The county medical examiner later ruled his death a homicide.

In the days after his death family members described the suddenness and shock of the loss and asked the community for any information that might help investigators. Community members also gathered in vigils and set up support efforts for Cameron’s family to assist with immediate needs. The Portland Police Bureau and local news outlets reported on the tragedy and asked anyone with video or eyewitness information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Public records and reporting show Cameron as a real person whose family spoke for him in the days after his death; beyond the sparse public details, he was a young person with relationships and a life in Portland that mattered to those closest to him. His loss was felt by family, friends, and neighbors who remembered him as a member of their community and who continue to seek answers. This remembrance honors Cameron’s life rather than the violence that ended it, acknowledging the limits of the public record while affirming the dignity of a young life taken too soon.
