Burl E. Ritcheson (Jan. 11, 1951–Aug. 14, 2017) was a devoted father and grandfather, an insurance adjuster and part‑time Murphysboro school bus driver who loved hunting, fishing and his Christ Community Church family.
Remembering Burl
A life held close in memory
Burl E. Ritcheson, 66, of Murphysboro, Illinois, passed away on August 14, 2017. Born January 11, 1951, in Monterey, Tennessee, Burl spent his life caring for others through both his work and community ties. Professionally an insurance adjuster, he also served the children of Murphysboro as a part‑time school bus driver, a role that reflected his steady, dependable nature.
Burl treasured time outdoors; hunting and fishing were among his greatest joys, and he carried those pastimes as ways to relax, reflect, and share moments with family. He was an active member of Christ Community Church in Murphysboro and found comfort and companionship in his church community.
Family was central to Burl’s life. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Mobbs (and son‑in‑law Darrin Mobbs) of Dunlap, Illinois; his son, Keith Ritcheson of Murphysboro; and three grandchildren, Benjamin Mobbs, Leah Mobbs, and Kenneth Hiser. Burl was preceded in death by his parents and by siblings who remain in the family’s memory.
Funeral services were held at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with friends and neighbors gathering to honor Burl and share memories of his steady presence, his love for the outdoors, and his dedication to family. In lieu of flowers, memorials were suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Burl and his wife, Brenda. Burl’s family remembers him for his quiet strength, his gentle care for those around him, and the simple pleasures—time outdoors and moments with grandchildren—that filled his life.
