Obituary

A formal remembrance

Betty Jane Amos McClellan of Morris Township, Greene County, passed away unexpectedly on March 22, 2009, at age 70. Known to many for her gentle generosity and steady presence in church and community life, Betty filled the lives of those around her with care and creativity.

Born June 23, 1938, in West Finley Township, Betty was an active member of Enon Baptist Church for many years. There she served as a deaconess, taught Sunday school, coordinated Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, and contributed to the women’s sewing circle. She also wrote the church newsletter, sharing news and encouragement with fellow congregants.

Betty loved working with her hands — quilting, sewing, and needlecraft were lifelong passions. She was well known locally for her baking and cake-decorating, delights she often shared at family gatherings and church functions. Outside of her volunteer work, Betty dedicated many years to the Pennsylvania Livestock Auction restaurant, where she worked for more than 25 years and served as manager in later years.

A 1956 graduate of Claysville High School, Betty settled in Morris Township in 1976 and built deep ties in the area. On April 15, 2001, she married Jacob Albert “Jake” McClellan, who survives her. She is also survived by three daughters — Lisa R. Gerhart of Houston, Pa., twins Shelly A. James of Oakdale, Pa., and Sherry L. Coffey of Canonsburg, Pa. — a son, David Amos of Bradenton, Fla., a brother James E. Stollar, a sister Waneta Wright, grandchildren, and other loving family members.

Betty’s family has suggested memorial contributions to the American Heart Association. Those who knew her remember a woman whose talents and quiet service strengthened church and community alike — a neighbor who sewed, baked, taught and welcomed others with warmth and skill. Her memory lives on in the lives she touched and in the handiwork she lovingly left behind.
