Bernabe Maldonado

Bernabe “Bernie” Maldonado, age 50, of San Antonio, is lovingly remembered by his family and friends. A devoted husband to Gelacia Maldonado and a proud father to Bernabe Maldonado Jr., Nicholas Maldonado, Israel Ace Maldonado, and Angelica Bell Maldonado, Bernie was surrounded in life by a large, close-knit family that included stepchildren, siblings, grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He is also survived by his mother, Frances Alcala.

Those who knew Bernie recall a man who valued family above all and often spent time with loved ones at the local neighborhood bar where he worked and socialized. His presence at gatherings, community events, and weekend get-togethers left an impression on neighbors and friends who remembered him for his friendliness, loyalty, and the steady way he looked out for his family.

In the days following his passing, family and community members gathered to honor his memory. Visitation and a rosary were held at the Angelus Chapel, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. He was laid to rest with honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Bernie’s family remembers a husband and father whose daily life was shaped by caring for those closest to him. He is mourned by his wife Gelacia; his children and stepchildren; his mother; siblings and extended family; and grandchildren who will carry his memory forward. Condolences shared by friends and family emphasize the many small but meaningful ways Bernie touched people’s lives—through shared meals, conversations, and the reliable kindness he offered.

Though his time was cut short, the warmth of Bernabe Maldonado’s relationships and the love of his family endure. He will be remembered at gatherings among family and friends, and in the quiet recollections of those who were fortunate to know him.
