Remembering Benjamin

A life held close in memory

Benjamin Joseph "B.J." Deen, 34, of Sumrall and a respected patrolman with the Hattiesburg Police Department, was a devoted husband and father whose life reflected steady service to family and community. A trained K‑9 handler and a recognized member of his department, Benjamin carried a deep commitment to helping others and to the duties of public service he embraced.

At home, he was remembered first for his love of family. He is survived by his wife, Robin Deen; his two children, Walker and Melah Deen; his parents, Mary Ellen and Dan Deen; his sister Candi Deen Sylvest; his brother Joshua Allen Deen; and his grandmother, Lorene Aultman. Those who knew him recall a man who took pride in his work and who treasured ordinary moments with his family.

Benjamin’s career with the Hattiesburg Police Department included work as a K‑9 officer — a role that combined his sense of duty with a bond to his canine partner. He was recognized within the department for his dedication and professionalism. Beyond his uniform, friends and neighbors remember him as steady and dependable: someone who quietly helped where help was needed and who valued his ties to home and community.

Though his life was cut tragically short on May 9, 2015, Benjamin’s example of service and his devotion to his family continue to be remembered by those who loved him. He leaves behind family who carry his memory forward and a community that honors his commitment to protecting others.

Benjamin was gone far too soon. May the love, memories, and moments connected to this life continue to be treasured, and may those mourning find comfort in remembering what mattered most.
