Remembering Alexander

A life held close in memory

Alexander Pedraza Díaz, a devoted son, fiancé, brother and father, passed away on January 18, 2023, at Yale New Haven Hospital. Born September 22, 1982, in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Alexander had lived in New Haven for most of his life and was a familiar presence to those who knew him there.

He is remembered by his parents, Tomás Pedraza and Andrea Díaz, who raised him in the New Haven area, and by his two daughters, Lexy Marie Pedraza and Liany Marie Pedraza of Coamo, Puerto Rico. Alexander shared his life with his fiancée, Laura Cano, with whom he resided, and is also survived by his brothers, Tomás Chael Pedraza and Anthony Pedraza, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved him.

Family and friends gathered to honor Alexander’s life at Star of Jacob Christian Church (Iglesia Cristiana Estrella de Jacob) in New Haven, with visitation and services held at the church followed by a prayer service and burial at Evergreen Cemetery. The Washington Memorial Funeral Home in North Haven assisted the family with arrangements.

Those who knew Alexander recall a life lived close to family and community. He maintained deep ties to his Puerto Rican roots while building meaningful relationships in New Haven. Though public details emphasize the sorrow of his passing, the names of those who survive him and the gatherings held in his memory speak to the love he inspired. Alexander’s daughters and the many relatives who survive him remain central to his legacy.

In lieu of repeating the circumstances of his death, family and friends are encouraged to remember Alexander for the roles he cherished: a loving father, a caring son, a partner, and a brother. Messages of sympathy, memories, and remembrances were shared at the services, and flowers or tributes could be sent through the funeral home’s arrangements. The family’s loss is felt by many; his memory lives on in those who loved him.
