Remembering Alexander
A life held close in memory
Alexander Mikhail “Alex” Gusev was born September 5, 1983, in Mogilev, Belarus, and carried a steady, kindly presence into every room he entered. After arriving in the United States as a young adult in 2003, Alex worked throughout his studies and earned a bachelor’s degree in Science and Business Management from Old Dominion University. He completed a municipal internship that led to a long career with the City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department, where he served as a Right-of-Way agent for nine years.
Alex was proud of the life he built through perseverance and practical care. His hard work made it possible for him to bring his mother to the United States, a decision that reflected his deep family devotion. Colleagues remembered him as easygoing with a ready sense of humor; friends and teammates knew him as an active player of volleyball and soccer who also loved to surf when he could find time in the waves.
He touched coworkers and neighbors with a straightforward warmth and a steady work ethic, earning respect in the community he served. Alex’s commitment—to family, to his studies, and to public service—spoke of a life shaped by determination and quiet generosity.
Though his life was cut far too short on May 31, 2019, those who knew him remember Alex for the small, human ways he made days easier: a joke at the right moment, a dependable presence on a team, and an unpretentious pride in doing a job well. His memory lives on in the family he cherished and the community he helped serve.
