Remembering Alex

A life held close in memory

Alex A. Hamzy (December 16, 1987 – October 12, 2022) was a devoted son, husband, brother, friend and a proud officer of the Bristol Police Department. Born and raised in Bristol, Alex graduated from Bristol Eastern High School and fulfilled a lifelong aspiration when he joined the department in 2014. Over eight years of service he became known for his steady good nature, contagious smile and a sincere desire to help others.

Alex cherished family time. He was deeply devoted to his wife, Katie, his parents Ahmad and Salma, his sisters Donna and Rania, and his nephews — relationships the obituary describes as central to his life. Family and lifelong friends remembered Alex for his laughter, his loyalty and the way he brightened rooms. He was also an enthusiast for fitness, a fan of the Yankees and Patriots, and enjoyed cars — particularly BMW M‑Series models.

Beyond patrol work, Alex took joy in guiding young people interested in public service. He served for years as an advisor to the Bristol Police Explorer Cadet Program, sharing skills and values with the next generation. In April 2021 he was selected to join the Central Regional Emergency Response Team (CR‑ERT), an achievement he considered among the highlights of his career.

Colleagues and community members often recalled Alex as “one in a million.” That character — a blend of pride in his hometown, commitment to service, and warmth toward family and friends — is how many choose to remember him. The family invited friends and the community to honor Alex’s life at calling hours on October 19, 2022, and at a funeral service held October 21, 2022. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Officer Alex Hamzy Memorial Fund to support his legacy.

Alex’s life was larger than a job title: he was a person who loved family, mentorship, and community. Those who knew him remember his kindness, humor, and dedication — qualities that continue to live on in the people he loved and the young lives he helped shape.

Alex was gone far too soon. May the love, memories, and moments connected to this life continue to be treasured, and may those mourning find comfort in remembering what mattered most.
