The story of Albert Itzkowitz
Albert “Avrumie” Itzkowitz was known to neighbors as a steady, kindly presence in Kew Gardens Hills and beyond. For years he ran the G&I Kosher Bakery on Main Street, a neighborhood fixture where generations turned for challah, cakes and the small rituals that mark family life. Even after the shop changed hands, the bakery’s place in the community remained tied to the memories he and his family helped create.
Outside of his work, Itzkowitz volunteered with Hatzolah, the Jewish community’s volunteer emergency medical service. That service and civic participation were part of how he was known: someone who answered a call when others needed help and who showed care through practical acts. Community notices and local accounts describe him as a family man — a husband, father and grandfather whose daily presence and quiet generosity were woven into the neighborhood’s everyday rhythms.
In late spring 2026 the community mourned a double loss: his wife, Malkie Itzkowitz, passed away in April, and weeks later Albert was found dead on May 18, 2026. Those close to him remember not the manner of his passing but the life he led — the bakery counter conversations, the volunteer shifts, the small kindnesses that do not make headlines but shape a neighborhood. Public remembrances and community notices organized funeral and shiva arrangements and recorded how deeply his loss was felt by family and neighbors.
While public reporting has documented the circumstances surrounding his death, the lasting memory many in Queens carry is of a man who quietly helped hold daily life together: baking for simchahs, volunteering his time, and being present for family. He is remembered in community tributes and at gatherings where neighbors and loved ones have spoken about his warmth and service. In that spirit, his memory endures among those who knew him and in the small, everyday ways his life shaped the neighborhood he loved.
