Remembering Albert

A life held close in memory

Albert J. Austin was born June 9, 1983, and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. Known to family and friends as “A.J.,” he was a devoted son to Albert D. and Marchelle Austin and a grandson of Shirley Ford. He also leaves behind siblings Cheniece, Demetrius, and Jamal and a large circle of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who remembered him for his bright spirit.

Those who left memories on his funeral page recalled A.J.’s easy laugh, his ability to lift people’s moods, and the small, everyday moments that made him part of the neighborhood — riding a bike down familiar streets, joking with childhood friends, and showing up for family. The arrangements listed by the family were handled by Calhoun Funeral Home, and a funeral service was held at Second Ebenezer Baptist Church on Sept. 30, 2008.

Albert’s life was cut tragically short on September 23, 2008. Law-enforcement records confirm that he was fatally shot outside his apartment on Lakeshore Boulevard in Cleveland. That loss left a hole in his family and community; condolence messages from friends describe a young man who made a lasting impression and who will be remembered for the kindness he showed to those around him.

Public memorials and remembrances emphasize the human ties that defined Albert’s life: family gatherings, long friendships, and the ordinary kindnesses that make a person beloved. While many personal details about his daily work, passions, or private life are not present in the public record, what is clear from family notices and community messages is that Albert mattered deeply to those who knew him.

This page honors Albert J. Austin as a person first — a son, grandson, brother, and friend — whose life held meaning beyond the circumstances of his death. Those who have memories of him are invited to keep his name and the warmth of those memories alive in their own words and acts of kindness.
