Remembering Alan

A life held close in memory

Alan Jandro Karalius (1974–2025) brought his voice and his heart to stages across eastern Iowa. Known to many as the lead singer of the band Sorry for Lastnight, Alan’s commanding stage presence and deep, resonant vocals made him a beloved figure in local clubs and at community events. Whether leading a raucous set or sharing a quiet conversation after the show, he connected with people through music and warmth.

Born in 1974, Alan spent much of his life in the Cedar Valley and surrounding communities, living in Garner in recent years while remaining a familiar face to fans in Waterloo and beyond. Music was central to who he was — a source of joy for himself and for those who gathered to hear him perform. Friends and fellow musicians recall his dedication to the craft, his willingness to lend his talents to benefit shows, and the energy he brought to every performance.

Family and friends have remembered Alan for more than his music: for the laughter he shared, the friendships he nurtured, and the moments of kindness he offered to others. In the weeks after his passing, members of the local music community organized tributes and memorial performances, honoring the role he played in their lives and the local scene.

Schott Funeral Home in Forest City is assisting the family. Those wishing to share condolences or memories are invited to do so through the tribute postings managed by the funeral home and the memorial pages established by friends and local outlets. Alan’s memory lives on in the songs he sang and in the community he helped build through music and friendship.
