Remembering Aaliyah

A life held close in memory

Aaliyah Nadine Chacon (July 3, 1997 — January 7, 2024), affectionately known to family as “Sugar Plum,” brought warmth and laughter into the lives of those closest to her. A devoted mother, Aaliyah’s greatest joy was her two children, Laela and Adrian, who she treasured above all else. She loved spending time with family, celebrating together, and creating memories in everyday moments.

Aaliyah was spirited and vibrant. She enjoyed music, keeping active by walking, and was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Small pleasures — Victoria’s Secret “PINK,” a favorite song, or a moment to relax with friends — reflected her lively, free-spirited nature. Those who knew her remember her as someone who valued time with loved ones and who found delight in life’s simple comforts.

She is survived by her parents, Desirea Cancino and Carl Haase (Natalie); grandparents Raymundo Chacon, Diana Cancino, and Elizabeth Suarez; siblings Estrella Chacon, Alexandria Gutierrez, Kayla Haase, Jae’Lynn Monique Haase, Carl Haase Jr., Christopher Haase, Johnny, Angelo, and Lexes Hernandez; uncle Raymundo (Monique) Chacon Jr.; aunts Diana Juana Cancino and Laura Montoya; and many cousins, relatives and friends who will carry her memory forward.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate Aaliyah’s life at a funeral service held at Angelus Chapel on January 19, 2024. In remembering Aaliyah, those who loved her recall a caring mother, a loyal family member, and a presence who brought color and energy into familiar rooms. Though her life was far too short, the love she gave her children and the closeness she shared with family are enduring legacies.

Aaliyah’s family asks that those who wish to honor her memory do so by holding family close, sharing stories of happier times, and cherishing the ordinary moments that become precious memories. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

Aaliyah was gone far too soon. May the love, memories, and moments connected to this life continue to be treasured, and may those mourning find comfort in remembering what mattered most.
