Remembering Temara

A life held close in memory

Temara Sarafina King (known to family and close friends as Sara) brought compassion and steady commitment to every role she embraced. Born in Jersey City on January 12, 1988, Temara was educated in the local public schools and graduated from New Jersey City University with a B.A. in Early Childhood Education, teacher certification for preschool through third grade, special education credentials, and a degree in sociology. She devoted her professional life to teaching in the Jersey City Public Schools and spent a decade working with children who needed patient, individualized support.

As a third-grade and special education teacher at Dr. Michael Conti Public School No. 5, Temara specialized in supporting students on the autism spectrum and earned recognition for her inclusive approach. In 2018 she was honored with the Inclusion Teacher of the Year award by the New Jersey Coalition for Inclusive Education — a tribute to her focus on access, dignity, and learning for every child. Colleagues remembered her as a steadfast union representative, an advocate inside the school community, and a teacher who put the needs of her students first.

Beyond the classroom, Temara was a loving mother and active member of her community. She cared deeply for her family and for the students whose lives she touched, and she worked to create safe, encouraging spaces where children could grow. Friends and former students recall her patient guidance, calm presence, and the everyday kindnesses that made school feel welcoming.

Temara’s life and work left a lasting impression on those fortunate to know her. Her alma mater and community organizations acknowledged her contributions after her passing on January 24, 2023. In her memory, family and friends established funds to support her daughter’s future education, a reflection of Temara’s lifelong belief in learning and opportunity.

Temara Sarafina King is remembered for her dedication to children, her devotion to family, and the quiet strength with which she served others. Her legacy lives on in the classrooms she shaped and in the students whose lives she helped to brighten.
