Remembering Stephen
A life held close in memory
Stephen Lee Davis, born September 25, 1993 in Gary, Indiana, was raised in East Chicago and cherished by a close-knit family and community. A graduate of the East Chicago public schools, Stephen carried a bright, easy humor and a ready smile that drew people in. He loved playing football and basketball, kept music close to his heart, and had a generous spirit described by family as having a "heart of gold."
Stephen was the beloved son of Serrena Lovelace (Eddie Davenport) of East Chicago and Terrance Davis Sr. of St. Paul, Minnesota. He is remembered by siblings D'Andree' Lovelace, Terrance Davis Jr., Stacey Lovelace, Lamar Davis (Cesalii Reed), Justiss Johnson, and Shauntel Davis, along with a wide circle of relatives and friends who filled his life with everyday moments and plans for the future. Those who knew him recall his compassion, his quick smile, and the way his presence made ordinary days feel lighter.
Family and friends gathered in East Chicago to honor Stephen’s life with funeral services at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church on May 12, 2014, followed by interment at Fern Oaks. Divinity Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. In the weeks and months afterward, messages left in his memorial guestbook—short notes of love, birthday remembrances, and quiet grief—reflect the small rituals that keep memory alive.
Though Stephen’s life was cut far too short, those who loved him remember a young man rooted in family, sports, and music, whose warmth and humor left an impression on everyone who met him. His family’s hope that his memory be carried forward in their stories and gatherings remains a testament to how deeply he was loved.
