Scott Wertz

Scott Alan Wertz, 40, of Spring Township, was a devoted husband and father whose commitment to his community guided his life and career. Born in Reading and raised in the area, Scott graduated from Wilson High School in 1984 and later completed the Reading Police Academy in 1994. He married Tricia Lynn (Schappell) Wertz on June 3, 1995, and their two sons, Jared and Joshua, were at the center of his life.

Scott served his community in multiple roles. From 1990 to 1996 he worked as a corrections officer at Berks County Prison and also served as a part-time police officer in Sinking Spring and South Heidelberg Township. He joined the Reading Police Department in 1997 and served for nine years, most recently as a criminal investigator and as a member of special details including the auto-theft task force. Colleagues remember him as a dedicated officer who cared about the people he served.

Beloved by family and respected by coworkers, Scott is survived by his wife Tricia; his sons Jared S. and Joshua A.; his father, Edward R. Wertz Jr.; a brother, Chad E. Wertz; and a sister, Michele L. Wertz. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia C. (Herbst) Wertz. Funeral services were held at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home with burial in Charles Evans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that contributions be made to the Jared and Joshua Wertz Scholarship Fund, a reflection of Scott’s devotion to his sons and his hope for their futures. His community remembered him for his service, his steadfastness as a family man, and the genuine care he showed to those around him.
