Rocky Mecham

Rocky Lee Mecham (June 22, 1954 – February 23, 2016) was a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, and a familiar presence across the Upper Country who loved the outdoors and his community. Born in Roosevelt to Glenn B. and Nelda Irene Beal Mecham, Rocky graduated from Altamont High School in 1972 and married his lifelong partner, Kim Caldwell, on April 5, 1975. Family was central to Rocky’s life; he treasured time with his children and grandchildren and was always ready to travel to their events and performances.

An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Rocky found great satisfaction in hunting and in caring for the land around his home. He kept watch over the ridge on his property so wildlife could thrive and often welcomed new friends and neighbors—he was known for his outgoing nature and ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. In his younger years he also enjoyed snowmobile racing and spent time coaching local youth in basketball and baseball, sharing his competitive spirit and encouragement with many of the area’s children.

Rocky built a long career in the hot oil industry beginning in 1975, working for companies including Shell, UTEX, Coastal, El Paso, Barry Petroleum, and Newfield. Even as he began to embrace a slower pace later in life, his work ethic and dedication remained part of who he was.

He is remembered by his wife of over 40 years, Kim, their children Kristy Lee (Thad) Nalder, Zakry B. (Stephanie) Mecham, Mikki Ann (Dustin) Mecham-McLaughlin, and Michelle (Wes) Casper; eight grandchildren; his mother Nelda Mecham; his mother-in-law JoAnne Caldwell; sisters Gail (Shane) Gardner and Sherry (Gary) Stringham; and a brother, Rodney Glenn Mecham. Rocky was preceded in death by his father, Glenn, and his father-in-law, Mick Caldwell.

Friends and family recall Rocky for his big heart, ready laugh, and the steady presence he offered his loved ones. He will be remembered for the ways he shared his passions, supported his community, and made room in his life for those he loved.
