Remembering Robert
A life held close in memory
Pastor Robert Anthony Matthews (February 6, 1956 – October 20, 2024) served his family, church and community with steady faith, a gifted musical spirit and a generous heart. Born in Ozark, Alabama, he discovered a love for music early—playing piano for the youth choir at First Baptist Church—and that gift remained a throughline in his life. After moving to Mobile, he built a long career at Evonik (formerly Degussa), retiring after 33 years, and later answered a pastoral calling.
In 2014 he was called to lead Joy Tabernacle Full Gospel Church, where congregants remember him as a humble and compassionate teacher and anointed musician who often accompanied worship on piano and organ. He was known for preaching plainly and preaching with conviction; his last message, delivered October 20, 2024, was titled “Committed to the Faith.”
Robert treasured his family. He and his wife, Twinetta Carol Jones Matthews, shared nearly five decades of marriage. He was father to Michael Anthony Matthews, Kerry Antonio Matthews, Barbara M. Stevens, Charity A. Matthews, and a son-in-law, Jaroid M. Craige. He took joy in his grandchildren, who survive him along with siblings, extended family and many friends.
Those who knew Pastor Matthews recall a life marked by musicianship, steady work, pastoral care and quiet dedication to loved ones. The family expressed thanks for the outpouring of support from church colleagues, friends and the staff at Smalls Mortuary. Services were arranged by Small’s Mortuary and held in Mobile, and he was laid to rest at Lawn Haven Cemetery.
He is remembered not only for the roles he held—pastor, musician, husband, father and retiree—but for the warmth he brought to worship and the steadiness he offered his community. His life left a lasting note of service and faith that many will carry forward.
