Remembering Patricia

A life held close in memory

Patricia “Pat” Brann Kemp Carney was a dedicated educator whose career in Killeen spanned more than 27 years. Beginning as a classroom teacher, she taught at Peebles and East Ward elementary schools before advancing to leadership roles, serving as assistant principal and principal of East Ward Elementary. Her devotion to students and to improving instruction led her to become the district’s director of elementary curriculum, where she worked to strengthen classroom practice across the schools she loved.

Colleagues remembered Pat as a studious and capable administrator who cared deeply about the children in her care and the teachers she supported. Her longtime service in the district made her a familiar presence to generations of families in the Killeen area. She and her family were active members of the local community, and her work left a lasting imprint on the district’s approach to elementary education.

On October 16, 1991, Patricia Carney died in the Luby’s cafeteria shooting in Killeen. Her passing was mourned widely by colleagues, students and neighbors. In the years since, the memory of her dedication to schooling has been honored locally: Killeen Independent School District named a new elementary campus Pat Carney Elementary to preserve her legacy of compassion, instruction, and service to children.

Though public records about her private life are limited in available sources, what is clear from contemporaneous reports and later remembrances is that Pat Carney’s professional life was centered on students and learning. The school that bears her name stands as a community acknowledgment of her decades of service and as a place where future generations may learn about an educator who made the needs of children central to her work.
