Obituary
A formal remembrance
Nicole Regina White of Smithfield, Virginia, was a warm and giving young woman whose life was marked by service to others and a steady devotion to her faith. Born August 23, 1986, Nicole grew up in Smithfield and was an active member of Nansemond River Baptist Church. Friends and family remember her as someone who loved the Lord and reached out to help people in practical ways.
From an early age Nicole showed a heart for helping others. While still in high school she completed emergency medical training and volunteered with the Smithfield Volunteer Rescue Squad. She worked as a lifeguard and swimming instructor and was involved with the YMCA, roles that reflected both her practical skills and her calm, caring presence around children and families.
At Virginia Tech Nicole pursued a double interest in international studies and German, reflecting a curiosity about the wider world and a desire to connect with others across cultures. On campus she continued her volunteer work, giving time at a local animal shelter and supporting a battered women’s shelter. Those who knew her said she looked for the goodness in people and sought to understand others by their hearts rather than appearances.
Nicole was cherished by her family — her parents Mike and Tricia White and her brother Evan — and by the many friends and community members who benefited from her generous spirit. Her church community recalled her faithful participation in outreach programs and her gentle, steady way of showing care.
Though her life was cut far too short on April 16, 2007, Nicole’s kindness, faith, and commitment to helping others left a lasting imprint on those who knew her. She is remembered for the quiet ways she served and for the warmth she offered to friends, children, and neighbors. Her family’s wish that others remember her love of God, people, and service continues to shape the ways she is honored and mourned.
