Nekoda Leftenant

Nekoda Leftenant, remembered by family and friends as “Koda,” lived a life marked by steady work, creative spirit, and deep devotion to his children. Born March 31, 1958, in Freeport, New York, he built a life that combined the rhythms of music with the discipline of sport and trade. Those who knew him recall his skill as a drummer, the pride he took in his amateur light‑heavyweight boxing, and a work ethic that sustained him for more than three decades as a subcontractor with AABLE Roofing.

Family was the center of Nekoda’s world. He loved his children fiercely and took pleasure in his grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter, Stacie “Tinker” Corley; sons Shawntae Barrett, Cedric Barrett, Nicholas Barrett, and Nekoda Barrett; grandchildren Dominique Robinson and TayMarie Robinson; and a wide circle of siblings, nieces, nephews, and close friends who carry his memory forward. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeffus Leftenant, Sr. and Joan Thomas Leftenant, and by siblings Franklin and Darius Leftenant.

Those who gathered to remember Nekoda celebrated both everyday kindnesses and the talents that made him unique — an accomplished drummer whose hands kept time, an athlete respected for his punching power, and a craftsman who took pride in his work. Visitation and a memorial service were held in Columbus at Marlan Gary Funeral Home, The Chapel of Peace, where family and community members honored his life and spoke of the joy he brought to those around him.

Nekoda’s life was made up of ordinary days lived with care: work done honestly, music shared with friends, and family gatherings where his presence was felt. The memory of his laughter, his commitment to his children, and the small acts of support he offered remain with those who loved him. He is remembered with gratitude and affection by family and friends who continue to cherish his legacy.
