Muhammad Afzaal Hussain

Muhammad Afzaal Hussain was a young professional whose quiet dedication and community spirit touched many. A graduate of the University of New Mexico, Afzaal served in leadership roles with student organizations and later brought his talents to public service as Planning and Land Use Director in Española. Friends and colleagues described him as hardworking and earnest — someone who pursued opportunities to learn, lead, and contribute to the places he called home.

Afzaal’s work in planning reflected an interest in practical, people-centered solutions for his community. He combined the training he received as a graduate student with a steady, respectful approach to public service, earning the trust of co-workers and neighbors. As a UNM alumnus active in campus life, he also supported fellow students and was remembered by student groups who organized vigils and tributes after his passing.

Beyond job titles, Afzaal was a young man with family ties that were important to him, and he was part of a broader community that valued his presence. Those who knew him recall his steady manner, his commitment to civic work, and the hope of a career just beginning. His sudden death on August 1, 2022, at age 27 left friends, family, and colleagues grieving the loss of potential and the kindness he offered in daily life.
