Miguel Diego Mendez

Miguel Diego Mendez was born June 12, 1981, in Guatemala and answered a call to serve that would define much of his life. Enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1999, Miguel rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant during a fifteen-year military career that included multiple tours overseas. He carried a deep pride in his service and a commitment to his country that his family and community remembered.

Beyond his uniform, Miguel was a devoted father. He is survived by his children, Miguel Luis Diego Mendez, Ezequiel Diego Mendez, and Isabella Grace Mendez, who were at the center of his life. Family meant everything to him — he was a son to Pascual Miguel Diego-Matias and Juana Mendez De-Diego, brother to Carlos Mendez, Domingo Diego Mendez, and Luis Angel Diego, and a brother to Yesenia Gonzalez. He is also remembered by aunts Tereza Torres and Carmen Iniguez and by many relatives who treasured his presence.

Those who knew Miguel recall a man shaped by service, family ties, and quiet devotion. He found identity and purpose in his military career, and he carried those values into his role as a father and son. His life included long stretches far from home during deployments to Kosovo and Afghanistan, and on his returns he welcomed the ordinary joys of family life.

A funeral Mass was held in late November 2014 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, followed by burial at Burke Memorial Park. Friends and family gathered to honor his memory and his years of service. The family received visitors at the funeral home prior to the Mass, providing an opportunity for community members to share condolences and memories.

Miguel’s life was marked by service and by the relationships he kept close.
