Marcus Vancleaf

Marcus B. VanCleaf, 32, was a devoted father, a familiar presence in his family and church, and a man whose life mattered deeply to those who loved him. A member of New Salem Baptist Church, Marcus drew strength and community there and is remembered by family and friends for the place he held in their lives.

He is survived by his children—Nya, Iyana, Kashawn, Loyal VanCleaf, and Trinity Tucker—who meant the world to him. Marcus was the son of Kim (Tony) Morgan and Donald (Annmarie) VanCleaf, Jr., and he is also remembered by his sister Kimara Morgan; brothers Isa, Javon, Kareem, Safir VanCleaf, and Troy Haley; grandparents Robert and Betty Lester, Henry L. Jackson, and Donald H. VanCleaf, Sr.; and great-grandmother Elizabeth Peoples. Marcus belonged to an extended circle of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who celebrated his life and who gathered to support one another in grief.

Those who knew Marcus recall his connections—to family, to his church community, and to the everyday moments that gave his life shape. He attended Independence High School and found fellowship at New Salem where he took part in the life of the congregation. While public records note the tragic circumstances of his passing on June 21, 2014, the story that family and friends tell first is of Marcus’s role as a loving father and relative whose presence mattered in many small, human ways.

Funeral services were held at New Salem Baptist Church on June 26, 2014, with interment at Glen Rest Memorial Estates. In the weeks and months that followed, family and community members sought ways to honor lives lost and to support one another. Marcus’s memory is carried forward by his children, his relatives, and the many friends whose condolences and remembrances attest to the place he held in their hearts.
