Obituary
A formal remembrance
Mahlon C. Osterhout Jr., 42, of Tyrone, passed away on December 2, 2019. Born in Philipsburg on December 6, 1976, Mahlon was a man who found real pleasure in simple, familiar things—time in the outdoors, the patience of a long fishing morning, and the company of his family.
A dedicated father, Mahlon’s children—Tessa, Willow, Rogan and Harlyn—were central to his life, and he delighted in moments spent with them. He welcomed the joy of grandparenthood with the arrival of his grandson Ryker. Family ties were important to Mahlon; he is remembered by his mother Cindy Miller Carper, his grandfather Mahlon R. Osterhout Sr., sisters Jeannie Powell, Deb Masters and Leahayn Pensyl, and his brother Bill Miller.
Mahlon worked for Yellow Spring Hardware in Alexandria, where his steady presence and practical know-how were appreciated by coworkers and customers alike. Outside of work he was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing—pursuits that reflected his patience, respect for nature, and the quiet companions he often shared those moments with.
Friends and family gathered to celebrate Mahlon’s life. A funeral service was held on Sunday, December 8, 2019, at Feller Memorial Home in Tyrone, with a time for calling hours prior to the service.
Those who knew Mahlon remember a man whose everyday pleasures—his family, the outdoors, and time spent doing hands-on work—spoke to who he was. He leaves behind children who carry forward his memory and relatives who will keep his stories alive. Mahlon’s life was rooted in family, in the steady rhythms of work and the outdoors, and in the small, meaningful moments he shared with those closest to him.
