Remembering Louis
A life held close in memory
Louis “Baker” Cochran lived a life rooted in family, community and a steady care for animals. Born August 22, 1941 in Yuma, Arizona, Baker completed a college degree and built a career that combined technical skill and service. He worked as a civil engineer and later shared his patience and knowledge with young people through time spent teaching in the Aiken County Public School System. In later years he also worked at Lowe’s in Aiken, where neighbors remember him as a helpful, practical presence.
Baker and his wife, Sandra “Sandy” Cochran, made their home and their life together on a farm in the Jackson area where animals — especially horses — were a central joy. Members of their church family at Green Pond Baptist Church recall the couple’s active participation in church life and their affection for local history and community traditions. Those who knew them described Baker as a neighbor who would lend a hand, and as someone who appreciated the slower rhythms of rural life.
Family was important to Baker. He was a husband and a father and is survived by daughters and grandchildren who carry forward his memory. The family arranged a joint memorial service held in Aiken in December 2015; they asked that memorial contributions be directed to Equine Rescue of Aiken in recognition of the couple’s love for horses.
Though public accounts record that Baker and his wife died in December 2015 and that their deaths were later ruled a homicide, what endures in community memory are quieter details: a man who tended his farm, who taught and helped local children, who attended church, and who cared for animals. Those personal and everyday connections are the clearest testimony to a life lived among neighbors and family. This page honors Louis “Baker” Cochran by holding those memories with respect and dignity, and by acknowledging the loss felt by those who knew him.
