Remembering Justin

A life held close in memory

Justin Terney (born December 14, 1994) was known in his community as a young man who chose service to others. Raised in southeastern Oklahoma and a graduate of Canadian High School, Justin followed a clear calling into public safety. He began gaining experience with the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office and later joined the Tecumseh Police Department, where he served in his first year as an officer. He also volunteered as a firefighter, showing a pattern of stepping forward when people needed help.

Friends, school officials, and colleagues remembered Justin as earnest and dependable — someone comfortable outdoors and respected for his work ethic and eagerness to learn. In his short time in law enforcement he showed the enthusiasm of someone who had long wanted to be part of the community’s safety, often reaching out to ride along with deputies before he was fully sworn.

When he died in late March 2017, the community response reflected the relationships he had built: hundreds of people lined streets during the procession, fire trucks and officers paid tribute, and vigils gathered neighbors, friends, and fellow first responders to honor his memory. Those who spoke about Justin emphasized his honesty, passion for service, and the steadiness he brought to his duties.

While public accounts focus on his service and the circumstances of his death, family members and local officials highlighted Justin’s role as a son and brother and the quiet ways he contributed to his hometown. His supervisors and peers noted the pride he took in wearing the uniform and his hope to continue growing in his career — including an interest in working with police canines.

Justin’s life, though tragically brief, was marked by an earnest commitment to help others. The outpouring of support from neighbors, school officials, and law enforcement agencies after his passing speaks to the human connections he made. This remembrance honors the life he lived: a young man who answered a call to serve and who is remembered for his dedication, his steady presence, and the love his family and community hold for him.

Justin was gone far too soon. May the love, memories, and moments connected to this life continue to be treasured, and may those mourning find comfort in remembering what mattered most.
