Remembering Joshua

A life held close in memory

Joshwua (Josh) Figueroa, born September 27, 1993 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, was a cherished son and brother whose life was rooted in New Haven. A graduate of Hillhouse High School, Joshwua was known within his family as a loving presence who kept close bonds with his mother, siblings, grandparents and extended family. He is remembered by his mother Rebecca Berrocales; sisters Meilany, Jessica, Taryana, Solmari, Nydializ and Ericka; brothers Elibel and Erick; and by his grandparents and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Family was central to Joshwua’s life. He spent his days surrounded by relatives and friends who recall him as caring and connected to those he loved. His upbringing — born in Puerto Rico and raised in New Haven — grounded him in close community ties and traditions that mattered deeply to his family.

Those who knew Joshwua remember quiet, personal qualities rather than public accolades: his devotion to family gatherings, the everyday kindnesses offered to relatives, and the presence he brought into rooms filled with people who mattered to him. His funeral arrangements brought family and friends together to honor his memory and the place he held in their lives.

Though his life was cut short on December 26, 2020, the warmth of Joshwua’s relationships endures in the memories of those who loved him. He was laid to rest with family at Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven. In remembering Joshwua, his family asks that his life be honored for the care he showed to those nearest him and the love he carried for home and family.
