Remembering Jose
A life held close in memory
Jose Rosario Barrera-Leon Jr., born July 5, 1985 in Ventura and raised in Oxnard, is remembered for his quick wit, intelligence, and deep love for his family. A 2003 graduate of Oxnard High School, Jose pursued further studies at ITT Technical Institute where he earned a degree in architecture — a field that reflected his thoughtfulness and attention to detail.
Family was central to Jose’s life. He cherished time with his parents, sisters, nieces and nephews, and delighted in being known affectionately as "Tio Joe." Those who knew him recall a warm, charismatic presence and a habit of living each day fully, guided by a personal motto of embracing life without regrets. His kindness and joyful spirit were often shared in small, everyday moments that meant the most to his loved ones.
The Barrera-Leon family invited the community to remember Jose at services held through Garcia Mortuary in Oxnard, with a rosary and Mass of Christian Burial honoring his life. Friends and relatives gathered to celebrate his memory and the many ways he brightened the lives of those around him.
Though his life was cut far too short on May 10, 2015, Jose’s memory endures in the stories, smiles, and the close family ties he nurtured. He will be held in the hearts of his parents, sisters Marissa, Anais, Berenis and Yarelie, his nephew Alex, niece Nathalie, and extended family and friends who continue to keep his spirit alive through their love and remembrance.
