Obituary

A formal remembrance

Jose A. Melendez, Jr., known to family and friends as Bert, was a devoted husband and father whose life centered on family, faith, and service to his East Chicago community. A retiree of Local #17 Heat and Frost Insulators of Chicago, Jose took pride in his craft and the steady example he set for his children. He and his wife, Irma (Rodriguez), shared more than three decades together, and their home was the center of family gatherings and quiet, ordinary joys.

Jose was actively involved at the Harbor Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, where his faith and fellowship were important parts of daily life. He also gave his time to neighborhood youth as a former East Chicago Little League coach, encouraging young players with patience and good humor. Those who knew him remember his easy smile and the simple pleasures he loved — especially fishing, which offered him peace and a chance to pass on quiet lessons to family and friends.

He is remembered by his children — Jose Melendez III, Maria Vargas, Alejandro Melendez and Natalie Melendez — and by grandchildren who carried forward his warmth. He was also survived by three sisters, nieces, nephews, and a wider circle of relatives and friends who valued his steady presence. Preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Maria Melendez, and his father-in-law, Paul Rodriguez, Jose’s life was honored by his community with services held at the Harbor Lighthouse Assembly of God and burial at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary.

Though his life was cut short on July 14, 2010, those who loved Jose remember him for the everyday ways he cared for others — coaching on the diamond, folding into conversation at church, or casting a line at the lake. His family’s request to omit flowers reflected his humble nature; in place of flowers, memories shared among family and friends have stood as the truest tribute. Jose’s steady faith, quiet generosity, and devotion to family continue to live on in those who knew him.
