The story of Jose Gutierrez

Jose (often rendered in sources as Joseluis) Gutierrez was a teenage son, student, and athlete whose life touched family, classmates, and teammates. A sophomore at Glencliff High School in Nashville, Jose played on the school’s soccer team and was described by school officials and his family as a bright young man with promise. Those who knew him remembered simple pleasures he enjoyed with loved ones; family members recalled shared meals and the everyday kindnesses that defined his presence around them.

Born February 18, 2001, Jose came of age in the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville. As a young man active in his school community, he balanced the routines of high school with time on the soccer field, where teammates and coaches noticed his enthusiasm for the game. Though public information about his life is limited, available records make clear he was a real teenager with family connections, friends, and the ordinary hopes common to someone his age.

In the early hours of January 15, 2018, Jose was critically wounded and later died from his injuries. The facts of his death are part of the public record, but they do not define the fullness of who he was. This page honors Jose primarily for his life — the roles he held as a son and student, the small everyday moments that are often most precious to family and friends, and the potential that those who knew him felt he carried forward. Though his time was far too short, remembering Jose means acknowledging the person he was beyond the headlines: a young athlete, a family member, and a member of his school community whose life mattered to many.
