In loving memory of
Joan Rosenthal
October 14, 1933 — September 22, 2009
Joan Rosenthal (Oct 14, 1933–Sept 22, 2009) was a devoted career counselor, Belvedere‑Tiburon Library volunteer, wife and grandmother whose kindness and service enriched her community.
Remembering Joan
A life held close in memory
Joan Rosenthal was born October 14, 1933, in Duluth, Minnesota, the youngest of six children. After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota in speech pathology, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and began a life of service and learning. Joan worked in the Palo Alto school system and later built a career as a counselor and career-planning educator, including seminars at the College of Marin and a private career counseling practice.
In 1960 she married Kenneth Rosenthal; together they raised two sons and later welcomed five grandchildren who were a source of great joy. Continuing her own education, Joan earned a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Dominican University in 1985. She brought that same thoughtful, supportive presence to volunteer work in her adopted community — serving on the Belvedere‑Tiburon Library Board, co-leading a contemporary book group, and remaining an avid reader and steady supporter of the local library.
Friends and colleagues remembered Joan for her warmth, intelligence, and quiet devotion to others. Her professional life as a career counselor and seminar leader reflected a lifelong interest in helping people find direction and opportunity; her volunteer work showed a parallel devotion to civic and cultural life on the Tiburon peninsula.
Joan’s life was cut short in September 2009. Her body was discovered outside her Tiburon home on September 22, 2009; the circumstances of her death have been the subject of a long-running investigation. While those facts are part of the public record, Joan’s identity lived far beyond headlines: a mother and grandmother, a counselor and teacher, a library volunteer, and a reader who shared her time and skills with neighbors and students. She is remembered for the care she gave others and for the steady role she played in a small community she served well.
