Remembering Jason
A life held close in memory
Jason Neil Shane Jr., known by his Crow name Bache Balatchia (“Man of Good Morals”), was a devoted husband, father, and active member of the Crow community. Born May 27, 1965, in Crow Agency, Jason grew up immersed in Crow traditions and a strong sense of family and community. A direct descendant of Chief Pretty Eagle, he carried his heritage with quiet pride and participated in ceremonies such as the Sun Dance and sweat lodge that connected him to his culture.
Jason loved working with animals and the outdoors. He trained racehorses, spent as much time as he could fishing and hunting, and enjoyed friendly competition at horseshoe tournaments. For several years he served as a Crow buffalo pasture game warden, a role that reflected his commitment to stewardship and community responsibility. At the time of his passing he was employed with the Pryor Head Start Program, contributing to the lives of local children and their families.
Family was central to Jason’s life. He married Tana Rock Above in 1986 and together they raised a large, close-knit family in Pryor. He was a son, brother, uncle, and friend whose presence at gatherings, ceremonies, and everyday moments brought steadiness and warmth to those around him. His great-grandmother bestowed his Crow name — a reflection of his character and the moral example he set for relatives and neighbors.
Those who knew Jason remember a man who loved the land, honored his culture, and worked quietly to support his community. He brought dignity and generosity to everyday life — in caring for animals, in participating in cultural rites, and in his work with young children. His passing on July 29, 2015, was a profound loss for family and the Crow Nation. He is remembered with deep respect for the life he lived and the traditions he upheld.
