Ja’Niya Richburg

Ja'Niya Ny'Jae Lynette Richburg was a proud Loris High School senior whose warmth, leadership and talent left a lasting impression on teammates, classmates and neighbors. Born November 18, 2006, Ja'Niya was celebrated on the court as a trailblazing athlete — the first female player at her school to surpass both 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds — and she carried that same dedication into the classroom.

Coaches and friends remember Ja'Niya for her joyful personality and her willingness to put others first. She delayed a personal college decision so she could sign with teammates, a small but telling example of how she put team and community above self. Those who knew her speak of a young woman who loved the game, encouraged those around her, and inspired younger players with both her skill and her generosity.

Ja'Niya had plans to continue her education and caring work in health care; she had been preparing for postsecondary study in biology and health-related fields and had accepted a scholarship that reflected both her academic promise and commitment to helping others. Her family and school community celebrated not only her athletic milestones but also her thoughtful, service-oriented goals for the future.

Though her life was cut far too short on April 29, 2025, the warmth Ja'Niya shared remains with the people she touched: teammates who called her a leader, coaches who admired her work ethic, classmates who remembered her laughter, and family who cherished her hopes. Her funeral and memorial services brought together a grieving community that will continue to honor her memory by supporting one another and remembering the bright young woman she was.

Ja'Niya is remembered as a daughter, friend, student and athlete whose presence made everyday moments better for those around her. Her accomplishments on the court and her plans to pursue a career in health care reflect a life oriented toward excellence and caring. She will be greatly missed and warmly remembered by the Loris High School family and the broader community.
