Remembering Gene

A life held close in memory

Gene Allen Twiford, born February 25, 1936, in Laurel, Nebraska, lived a life rooted in community, service, and family. Raised on a farm west of Laurel by Harold and Lillian Twiford, Gene carried a farmer’s work ethic and steady devotion to home throughout his life. After graduating from Laurel High School in 1952, he continued working the land alongside his father and uncle and later served his country in the United States Army from 1958 to 1964.

In 1960 Gene met Janet Haan; they married on April 15, 1961, and made a life together on the farm south of Laurel for more than five decades. Gene raised four children with Janet and took great pride in his growing family—children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who remember him for his gentle guidance and the small pleasures of farm life. He was known for enjoying time with his grandsons and for the playful shortcuts he’d take while spending time with them.

Gene’s commitment to others went beyond family. He was a lifetime member of United Lutheran Church in Laurel and contributed through programs such as Meals on Wheels. For nearly five decades he was an active member of the Laurel Veterans Post and the American Legion, even serving as Nebraska State Commander of the American Legion from 2000–2001. He also chaired the Cedar County Veterans Service Committee for 31 years and worked to honor veterans across the state, including efforts that helped rename Highway 20 the Medal of Honor Highway.

Those who knew Gene remember a man who worked hard, served willingly, and cherished family gatherings. He loved the land he farmed, the community he supported, and his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and several in-laws, and he entered into rest alongside his loving wife Janet and their daughter Dana. Gene is survived by his children Todd (Judy) Twiford, Jill Olesen (Brian Eddie), and Gail (Jeff) Curry; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, as well as extended family and friends who carry forward his memory.

A memorial service was held in Laurel, and memorials were requested to be directed to the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department or the Laurel Vets Club. Gene’s life—marked by service to family, faith, and fellow veterans—left a lasting legacy in the small community he called home.
