Remembering Gabriel
A life held close in memory
Gabriel “Gabe” Zimmerman (1980–2011) was remembered for his steady kindness, his dedication to public service, and the way he brought people together. A Tucson native, Gabe built his life around helping others — earning a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Master of Social Work from Arizona State University’s Tucson program. He began his career with Arizona’s Children Association and went on to serve constituents for several years in the Tucson and Sierra Vista offices of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, ultimately serving as her Community Outreach Director.
Colleagues and friends recalled Gabe as energetic, thoughtful, and unafraid to roll up his sleeves to solve a problem. He handled thousands of constituent concerns with patience and compassion and organized public events that made government more accessible. Outside of work, those who knew him remembered his love of history and the small, generous ways he showed he cared — from thoughtful conversation to a commitment to social justice.
Gabe was engaged to be married; he was also a beloved son, brother, grandson, and friend. He is survived by his mother Emily Nottingham; his father Ross Zimmerman and stepmother Pamela Golden; his brother Ben Zimmerman; grandparents Jim and Rachel Zimmerman; and many aunts, uncles and cousins who cherished him. Community tributes and memorials in the weeks after his passing reflected the deep affection felt by those who knew him and the many lives he quietly improved.
Though his life was cut far too short, Gabe’s work and his compassion left a lasting imprint on Tucson. He is remembered not primarily for the manner of his death but for the steady commitment to others that defined his life.
