Remembering Flora
A life held close in memory
Flora Mae Middleton Gantt was born May 22, 1947, in Walterboro, South Carolina, and grew into a life grounded in family, faith and service. A graduate of Colleton High School (Class of 1965), Flora spent her adult years caring for loved ones and building connections across the Lowcountry. She worked for a time with Dayco Products and later served with the Colleton County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs as a direct support staff member — work that reflected her patience and commitment to helping others.
Flora was a faithful member of St. Paul CME Church, where she served in many ministries including the Missionary and Stewardess Boards, weekly Bible study, Sunday School, and as a dedicated kitchen helper. Those roles were important to her: they were places where she expressed compassion, shared fellowship, and built lifelong friendships.
Family was central to Flora’s life. She was the daughter of the late Isaac Middleton, Sr. and Bertha Levine Middleton, and a loving mother to her daughters. She cherished her grandchildren and the extended circle of nieces, nephews and friends who remembered her warmth, steady presence and the many small kindnesses she offered. Flora’s life was also marked by deep ties to friends and community members who relied on her generosity and who called her a friend in times of need.
Flora departed this life on December 4, 2021, in Beaufort, South Carolina. Her family celebrated her life with services in Walterboro the following week. She is remembered for her faith, her service to others, and the practical, comforting ways she cared for family and neighbors. Those who loved her recall a woman whose days were given in quiet devotion to others — a legacy of love and steady service that endures in those she leaves behind.
