Calvin Brothers

Calvin Alfonzo Brothers was a Hopewell, Virginia native whose life centered on family, community, and the camaraderie of team sports. A graduate of Hopewell High School, Calvin was known locally for his participation on the school’s football team; teammates and coaches remember fellow players who shared long practices, Friday‑night lights and the everyday bonds formed around the field. Those early years in Hopewell helped shape a young man who valued teamwork and showed up for the people closest to him.

Outside of athletics, Calvin’s most important role was as a father. Family members have described him as devoted to his children; that responsibility and affection defined much of his adult life. Friends and neighbors in the Nottingham Court area of Hopewell recall a man who belonged to the fabric of his neighborhood — someone whose presence was part of the ordinary routines that knit a community together.

On the evening of August 9, 2014, Calvin’s life was tragically cut short when he suffered fatal gunshot wounds and was taken to John Randolph Medical Center. The event shocked his family and the wider Hopewell community. Local investigators responded to the scene and appealed for information; despite those efforts, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unresolved in public records.

While the unanswered questions surrounding his passing remain painful, the memory of Calvin’s life rests with those who loved him: his children, family, friends and the classmates who remember his years at Hopewell High.
