Obituary
A formal remembrance
Caleb James McKenzie, 21, passed away suddenly on June 4, 2024, at Grant Medical Center. Those who knew Caleb recall a young man with a generous spirit: he cared about others, showed compassion to people experiencing homelessness, and was always ready to lend a hand. Family was central to his life; he loved and prioritized those closest to him and is remembered as someone who cherished his relationships.
Caleb is survived by his mother, Amber (Kevin) Irby; his father, Brandon McKenzie; sisters and brothers Breanna, Adrionna, Sean, Kyriah, Ava, Ty, and Hunter; his devoted girlfriend Destiny Brewer; maternal grandmother Frances; paternal grandfather James “Dino”; aunts Shannon, Stephanie, and Sarah; uncle Anthony (Amber) McKenzie; and numerous other relatives and friends whose lives he touched.
A devoted son and caring friend, Caleb is remembered for small, meaningful gestures — the kindness he offered to people in need and the warmth he showed to his family. Those who loved him describe him as a good-hearted young man who took care of those around him and treasured close relationships.
Visitation will be held at Jerry Spears Funeral Home, 2693 W. Broad St., on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, from 5:00–7:00 p.m., with a service to follow at 7:00 p.m. The family has requested contributions to assist with funeral expenses in lieu of other expressions of sympathy.
Caleb’s life, while far too brief, was marked by compassion and the quiet ways he made a difference to people near him. He will be remembered for his loving presence, his generosity toward others, and the deep bonds he held with his family. Those who wish to honor his memory are asked to hold his loved ones in their thoughts and to carry forward the kindness Caleb showed so naturally.
