Remembering Byron
A life held close in memory
Byron “Big Baby” Jackson, 21, is remembered for the warmth and larger-than-life spirit he shared with family and friends. A 2015 graduate of McDonogh 35 High School, Byron went on to pursue his studies at Southern University at New Orleans, where he continued to build friendships and invest in his future. Those who knew him recall a kind, fun-loving young man who enjoyed spending time with loved ones and who carried a gentle, giving nature.
Byron grew up with strong ties to family and faith. He accepted God into his life at an early age and was baptized at Reaping the Harvest International under Pastor Troy Lawrence. He was affectionately called “Big Baby” by those close to him — a nickname that spoke to both his playful side and the deep affection his family held for him.
He is survived by his parents, Carolyn Jackson and Emanuel Bowden Jr.; siblings Kenneth Jackson (Vikesha), Kendricka Jackson, Jessica Jackson, Leroy Jackson, Kadijah Jackson, Jamal Woods, Terrance Woods, Damien King, Skyler James, Dominique Woods, and Tijuana Bowden; grandfathers Robert Smith Sr. and Emanuel Bowden Sr.; and a wide circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who treasured him. He was preceded in death by grandmothers Zenobia Smith and Catherine Bickem and by his niece Khloe Jackson.
Family, friends, and community members gathered to celebrate Byron’s life at Reaping the Harvest International Church. In tributes and reflections shared at his service and online, people remembered his laughter, his generous spirit, and the simple, meaningful ways he showed love. Though his life was cut short, Byron’s kindness and the memories he made with family and friends continue to live on in their hearts.
Byron’s family invited those who loved him to honor his memory by gathering, sharing stories, and holding one another with compassion. His life — though brief — left an impression of a young man who loved fiercely and offered warmth to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
