Remembering Benjamin

A life held close in memory

Benjamin F. Grair Jr. was a young Cleveland police officer whose life combined public service with a readiness to help others. Appointed to the Cleveland Police Department in October 1981, Grair served in the Fourth District and, like many officers, supplemented his income by taking a part‑time position as a bank security guard. Colleagues described him as quiet, reserved and soft‑spoken — someone who preferred to lend a hand rather than draw attention to himself.

Outside his uniform, Grair was family-oriented. Contemporary notices and memorial records list his wife, Barbara, and siblings Joseph, Lee and Renee among his survivors, and indicate he was laid to rest following services at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with burial at Highland Park Cemetery. Those who remembered him spoke of a man who was fun-loving and eager to help — small, human qualities that shaped how he lived and how those who knew him now remember him.

Grair’s death on August 5, 1983, cut short a life of growing public service. For two years he had been a member of the Cleveland Division of Police and previously had worked seven years with Cleveland State University (records show prior service there). Memorials kept by the Cleveland police community honor his service and note the deep sense of loss felt by his colleagues and family. The response of the community in the days after his passing, and the subsequent legal actions related to the person charged in the crime, are part of the public record; they do not, however, define the human being who loved his family and chose a life of service.

Though a formal published obituary matching his exact death date was not located in online archives accessible during this research, institutional memorial pages and court records confirm the key details of his appointment, service, survivors and end of watch. These sources preserve remembrance of Benjamin F. Grair Jr. as a real person — a husband and sibling, a public servant, and a neighbor whose kindness and steady presence mattered to those around him. His memory is kept alive in the memorials of the Cleveland police community and in the quiet recollections of family and friends.
